So it’s no surprise that The Bureau of Meteorology is on a winner with its Australian Weather Calendar.
The BOM hasassembled a stunning collection of images to feature in next year’s calendar which has been released just in time for Christmas.
Indulge in pages of spectacular Australian images including a crack of lightning over the Kimberley, a single plane dwarfed by an altocumulus cloud or the mosaic effect caused by torrential rain on a windscreen on a busy Sydney street.
This year's cover image features a full moon alongside the planet Mars shining through cirrostratus clouds over Kosciuszko National Park.
CEO and Director of Meteorology Dr Andrew Johnson said he is excited about the collection of images featured in this year's calendar.
"Every year the Australian Weather Calendar stands out due to its exceptional quality and detail with every image accompanied by a scientific explanation of the phenomena featured,’’ he said.
Hundreds of photographers from every Australian state and territory submitted images to the Bureau for selection in this year's calendar, with only the best chosen to represent the full spectrum of Australian weather.
Other photographs featured in the 2018 line up include:
- Aurora australis over Davis Station, Antarctica
- Lightning over Lake Argyle in the Kimberley, Western Australia
- A cold front brings powerful waves to Mornington Pier, Victoria
- Sunset through fog at Mount Hotham, Victoria
- Lightning strike over Mount Isa mines, Queensland
- Storm cell seen across the West MacDonnell Ranges, Northern Territory
