A group of Year 12 students has learnt on-the-job skills in their vocational training course during the building of Sutherland Shire’s newest park.

Barden Ridge Park, which is next to Lucas Heights Community School, will be officially opened on Saturday, December 9.
The park, built by Sutherland Shire Council, includes a a circuit dinky / scooter track and play equipment for children of varying abilities, aged 3-15, including a fort, swings and climbing net.
Picnic tables and shelters are also provided.
Students in the Construction Pathways VET (vocational educational and training) course at the adjoining high school have been visiting the work site every fortnight from July.
Mayor Carmelo Pesce said it had was an excellent opportunity for the students.
Cr Pesce said the school had been involved in the process since the planning phase, and the students had learnt valuable skills.
“Each week, the project team sets a new topic for them about one aspect of the construction works, which they then follow through in class,” he said.
Funding for the playground was provided from SUEZ Lucas Heights Resource Recovery Facility contributions.
Proposed stage two works, which are subject to approval and funding, include an amenities building.
