Bendigo is home to Australia’s best hot cross buns, according to the Baking Association of Australia.
The Good Loaf scooped the competition at the Victorian Baking Show and Australia’s Hot Cross Bun Competition in Shepparton on Saturday.
The bakery’s vegan, semi-sourdough hot cross bun beat more than 90 other entries to take the title.
“We have spent a lot of time working on our recipe and really taking on board the judges feedback over the past couple of years to improve the product,” The Good Loaf owner Laurie Whelan said.
“We aren’t a conventional bakery, so to win this is absolutely huge within our industry.”
Entries were judged on their volume, colour, fruit-to-dough ratio, and moistness of fruit.
