To mark the National Trust's Heritage festival, local author and historian Gary Lester will be talking rugby league at the Sutherland Memorial School of Arts on Saturday, April 21.
This year the Australian Heritage Festival is focusing on the theme “My Culture, My Story” and they will be celebrating the diversity of cultures that have shaped our shared heritage.
The Sutherland Shire Historical Society says the Heritage Festival is an opportunity to reflect on the places where we live, work, and travel, and why they are so special to us.
Mr Lester, a former Sharks player, sports journalist and author of the definitive history of rugby league in the shire (The Sharks: Colour me Black, White and Blue) will give those in attendance rare insights to the formative years of rugby league in the Sutherland Shire .
Learn about the heros and the highs and lows of the Cronulla Sutherland Sharks team culminating in their premiership victory in 2016.
Do you know where and when the first rugby league team in Sutherland Shire was? And why the Cronulla Sutherland Sharks Club is unique in rugby league? These and many other questions will be answered.
There will also be a unique display of signed club jerseys including North Sydney Bears, Illawarra Steelers, Western Suburbs Magpies and Gold Coast Seagulls.
All are welcome.
The talk will begin at 1.30pm on April 21 at the Sutherland Memorial School of Arts, 23 East Parade.
