Georges River Council has taken actions to protect residents and the environment by containing the former Oatley Bowling Club site, and its surrounds, following the discovery of fragments of bonded asbestos.
“Council monitoring has revealed that two of the retaining walls at the site have deteriorated and the slight movement of material containing asbestos,” a council spokesperson said.
“Council has obtained independent scientific advice, which has confirmed that the material currently does not pose a significant risk of harm to human health or the environment, including the adjoining Myles Dunphy Reserve.
“However, in order to ensure it does not spread beyond the site boundary, Council has erected a fence around the entire perimeter to prevent access until such time that the asbestos can be further managed.
“Council takes the matter of asbestos very seriously and will continue to work to ensure the material does not pose any risk to the community or the adjoining Myles Dunphy Reserve.
“Council appreciates the community’s cooperation during this time and asks that residents refrain from accessing the site while ever the fence remains.”
