A free program for young parents is hoping to give people greater confidence in raising their children.
Sutherland Shire Family Services is launching ‘Baby & Me’ this month, a group geared towards mums under the age of 24.
The six-week program aims to strengthen mother-child connections, ensuring they have adequate support.
It was designed to reduce isolation and the feelings of being overwhelmed when it comes to having a child.
It is run by specialist parenting educators from Sutherland Shire Family Services at Engadine District Youth Services (EDYS).
They will also teach participants about the key physical, social and emotional development milestones, along with the importance of communication and play.
Group facilitor and EDYS manager, Kim Byron, says the goal is to equip the young parents with insider knowledge, and encourage them to mix with people of a similar age.
“[This will] give them more confidence in their parenting approach,” she said.
“As many new mums often don’t have time to properly take care of themselves when looking after newborns, we’re offering [also] a free light lunch to make sure they are taken care of as well.”
The groups will run every Tuesday from May 22.
Anyone who is under 24 and is either pregnant or has a newborn under six months old is welcome.
Partners, parents, carers and friends are also encouraged to join.
Places are limited. For bookings call 9528 2933 or email info@ssfs.org.au
