Re ‘‘Extra services in peak: Signals upgrade for T4 and T8 train lines’’ (Leader, June 13).
I read with delight that extra peak hour trains are proposed on the Illawarra line. But, in the early 2020’s, really! (sounds a bit like the light rail in the city).
People that rely on trains need these additional services now! and no doubt will need more services by the early 2020’s.
Just the other day at Hurstville the train was so full passengers could not get on and this was in normal service.
It is also often the case at Wolli Creek where in normal service passengers are left running up and down the platform trying to get on train so as to get to work.
Politicians should be required to catch public transport to work in peak hour daily (not just randomly for publicity) then we may have a chance of reasonable service.

This is good to hear. Investment in trains to make them faster and more frequent encourages more rail travel, freeing up the congestion on our roads.
Peak services are 7am to 9am and 5pm to 7pm currently. I find some of the busiest trains are just before these times.
We see it in our roads too, which can be very busy in afternoons and even on weekends.
Services can be made more frequent in these times by extending peak services, which do not require expensive infrastructure investment or more rolling stock.

All trains used to stop at Kogarah before this government changed the timetable. I will be retired by the time this government gets this up and running.

Won't help those who are trying to get to St George for treatment .. .. having to do the arduous trek across platforms at Hurstville to get to Kogarah.

There is a train every 3 mins in peak hour now to Bondi and if one of those is a couple of minutes late it has a domino flow on effect.
So I can’t see how you could add more. I think this is more to do with getting into election mode and promising everything under the sun and then some.

They should have invested some thought into making the 3.24pm and 3.54pm Kiama trains 8 cars. It isn't fun standing for 1.5 hours from Central to Wollongong on those two particular services.
