SYDNEY is being hit with lashing rain and icy winds as temperatures plummet.
Winter has St George and Sutherland Shire in its icy wet grip as rain continued to fall across the region overnight and into the morning and the temperature plunged.
The NSW coast has had 12 millimetres of rain since 9am yesterday with another 20mm forecast today.
“Sydney will continue to experience coastal thunderstorms on top of the rain as a low-pressure trough heads out to sea,” Weatherzone’s Craig McIntosh said.
We will hit a high of 16 degrees today, 18 tomorrow and 17 on Thursday with continuing showers through the week.
But those wishing for a reprieve from the chilly conditions at the weekend will be bitterly disappointed when the mercury dips to lows of 7-8 degrees.
The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has also issued a marine wind warning for the region advising surf and swell conditions were expected to be hazardous for coastal activities such as rock fishing, boating and swimming.
Large and powerful waves are expected to slam the southern Sydney coastline today.
The hazardous surf warning is expected to continue into Wednesday, the bureau said.
