Although there is a number of other chocolate days highlighted around the block – this truly is the day to celebrate the best way you know how.
In respect of the day, Cellarmasters has provided us with a unique recipe perfect for this time of year.
Red Wine Hot Chocolate Recipe
Winter calls for red wine and chocolate – so why not mix the two together?
This delicious recipe will be your new favourite winter toddy.
Combine dark chocolate, a touch of cinnamon with a red wine that has dusty chocolate and fruity notes such as a Cabernet Sauvignon.
Try the Black Wattle Mt Benson Cabernet Sauvignon as it’s full of black cherry and juicy plum with integrated French Oak, available at Cellarmasters. Top with whipped cream and marshmallows for a decadent treat.
Ingredients
- 140 grams dark chocolate, finely chopped
- 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 tablespoons packed brown sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon and cinnamon sticks to serve (optional)
- 4 cups full cream milk
- Pinch of salt
- 1 1/2 cups of Cabernet Sauvignon, a wine that tends to have dusty chocolate notes, like this Black Wattle Mt Benson Cabernet Sauvignon
- Whipped cream, marshmallows or cocoa powder, for serving (optional)
Step 1
Whisk the chocolate, cocoa powder, sugar, and cinnamon together in a large saucepan. Add the milk and bring to a simmer over medium heat, whisking occasionally, until hot and smooth, about 5 minutes. Stir in the salt.
Step 2
Remove from the heat and add the wine. If you’d like to heat the wine before doing so, make sure not to let it boil, as this can evaporate the flavours. Divide among 8 small glasses or mugs, garnish with marshmallows, a dusting of cocoa powder or even whipped cream, if desired, and serve.
Serve and enjoy by the fire!
