Following his success of being awarded the 2018 Gallipoli Art Prize, Kogarah Bay artist Steve Lopes presents a continuation of work from his travels overseas.
Impossible Find is a new exhibition which presents an evocative exploration of the artist’s encounters with people who are on the move, in a constant state of the unknown.
Created over two years from his travels in Europe, Lopes acts as storyteller and lens to the turbulent, mass movement of people across the continent and their collective experiences.
Lopes presents a sensitive and nuanced depiction of the complex traveller figure from his personal interactions with people in these spaces.
In situating figures approaching towns, traversing through rural landscapes or city streets, the compositions depict people unencumbered by borders or places – free from the restraints of modern institutions.
Impossible Find opens at the Stella Downer Fine Art Gallery, 1/24 Wellington Street, Waterloo, on Thursday, July 12 at 6pm.
The exhibition continues until August 4.
