A man who fell to his death while whale watching at Cape Solander on Monday afternoon has been identified as US-born citizen Gavin Paul Zimmerman, aged 18.
Mr Zimmerman, who was from Utah, had been serving as a missionary in Sydney with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
It was the second death from the clifftop at the popular Kurnell whale watching site in six weeks.
Police Chief Inspector Chris Hill said it appeared the man was whale watching with a group of friends when they made their way down to the rocks.
“At this stage it appears to be a misadventure: he has slipped and fallen over the edge and unfortunately died,” Chief Inspector Hill said.
His family released a statement saying, “it is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we share the news of our son’s passing. Gavin began his mission on August 16, 2017. He was a bright light in our lives. Our family will miss him greatly.”
Media reports the man was a British tourist were unconfirmed.
On June 9, a man, believed to be in his 30s, slipped and fell to his death while taking photos.
