Update
The condition of the couple who were injured in an accident at Bellingara netball courts on Saturday is now stable.
A spokeswoman for the South East Sydney Local Health District provided the update on Sunday morning.
She also said the woman was 61 and the man 65, which differs from earlier reports.
Update
A group of men lifted a four-wheel-drive off the ground to rescue the woman who was critically injured by a reversing vehicle at the Bellingara netball courts, Miranda, on Saturday.
The woman, 61, and her husband, 65, who was also seriously injured, were at the courts to watch their granddaughter play.
A 73-year-old woman is believed to have hit the accelerator instead of the brake while reversing into the car park of the centre, near the top courts, about 10am.
The injured woman was taken by ambulance to St George Hospital in a critical condition after being trapped against a fence by the 4WD.
Her husband, who received head injuries, was also taken to St George Hospital.
The courts were packed with children and spectators, including several off-duty emergency services officers, who rendered assistance.
Stephanie Wise, an off-duty paramedic who was at the grounds with her daughter, told Fairfax Media she went to the scene after hearing “the lady over the loud-speaker with the quiver in her voice yelling for the doctor”.
Ms Wise said the man who had been struck was lying away from the car, while the woman was pinned between the car and the fence.
“There were 10 guys gently yelling at each other, saying ‘we’ve got to move the car, we’ve got to move the car,’ ” Ms Wise said.
“Then they all kind of lifted this relatively big four-wheel-drive, and pushed it a metre. And then kind of pulled her out of the fence.”
Ms Wise said she and another off-duty paramedic attended to the man and woman.
Another witness, Sue, said the incident occurred right near the canteen. “There were loads of people around,” she said.
Off-duty firefighter Scott Henderson said the injured woman was conscious and talking to those giving aid.
“We were trying to crack jokes between the firies and ambos just to lighten the mood for her,” he told 7 News.
Chief Inspector Gary Ford, from Sutherland police, said it appeared that the 73-year-old driver hit the accelerator instead of the brake while reversing.
"In doing so she’s reversed into two people standing next to a motorcycle," Inspector Ford said.
"That motorcycle has been knocked over.
“One of those pedestrians was trapped underneath the motor vehicle for some time, between the vehicle and the fence, before some members of the public that were here at the courts were able to release her from that position.
"I believe there was a number of members of the public who came and pulled the fence away from the person to make some space for them to be able to get out," he said.
Inspector Ford said a "lot of" off-duty emergency services workers at the courts were able to grant assistance.
