Wind gusts of more than 60km/h have already been recorded across parts of Sutherland Shire on Sunday morning – but the Bureau of Meteorology has warned even stronger winds could be on the way.
The bureau has issued a severe weather warning for damaging gale force winds and damaging surf in coastal areas of Sydney.
“A complex low pressure system over the Tasman Sea is combining with a high pressure system to the state's west to produce vigorous south to southwesterly winds and large waves, especially along southern parts of the coast,” the bureau said.
Damaging wind gusts, in excess of 90km/h, are possible with showers and thunderstorms for coastal parts of the state south of Wollongong from Sunday afternoon.
A westerly wind gust of 65km/h was recorded at Kurnell at 8.50am on Sunday, while an 35km/h gust from the west was felt at Sydney Airport at 9.30am.
Sydney can expect a mostly sunny day with a top temperature of 17 degrees.
There is a slight (30%) chance of a shower along the coastal fringe in the afternoon and evening. Near zero chance of rain elsewhere.
Winds will continue to be westerly 40 to 50 km/h turning southwesterly in the early afternoon then decreasing to 30 to 40 km/h in the late afternoon.
The week ahead looks likely to be cool with 17 degrees the top on Monday and a forecast top of 19 for the remainder of the working week,
hazardous surf warning is current for the Sydney, Illawarra, Batemans and Eden coasts on Sunday, and will remain in place on Monday.
Surf and swell conditions are expected to be hazardous for coastal activities such as rock fishing, boating and swimming.
