Sunday’s bitter wind did not deter 21 volunteers from the Oatley Flora and Fauna Conservation Society and the Oatley Kayak Crew from helping the Bankstown Bushland Society clean-up the beach and surrounds at Beauty Point Reserve, on the Georges River at Padstow Heights.
In four hours, they collected 49 large bags containing hundreds of straws, bottle tops, lighters, syringes, and glass and plastic bottles, not to mention thousands of tiny polystyrene particles.
“There was even a tyre and wheel, a suitcase and furniture washed up along the riverbank,” Oatley Flora and Fauna spokesperson James Deli said.
“It was a pleasure to help out our next-door neighbours in the Bankstown area,” he said.
“The Georges River knows no boundaries and chances are the rubbish would have ended up downstream in Riverwood, Lugarno or Oatley.”
