A man has been hit and killed by a train at Riverwood this afternoon .
Emergency services were called to Riverwood railway station before 3pm following reports the man had been hit.
NSW Police don't think it was a case of self-harm and are working to establish what the man was doing on the tracks.
"We're investigating along the lines of a misadventure – we don't believe it's self-harm," a police spokesman said.
Witnesses speaking with Nine News said a young man was seen spraying graffiti on a stationary train when he stepped back into the path of an oncoming express train.
A crime scene was set up at the station and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
There was partial closure of the T8 line between Revesby and Kingsgrove towards the City as police carried out their investigations.
Buses were operating for a short time before services recommenced in both directions around 5pm.
