An interim heritage order will be sought to stop historic Hotham House at Kirrawee being demolished to make way for a car park.
The move was unanimously supported by Sutherland Shire Council at its meeting on Monday night.
Cr Ray Plibersek’s motion to commence court proceedings also called for talks to take place with property owner Macquarie Health Corporation to seek preservation of the house and its continued use within the President Private Hospital complex.
“I believe it could be effectively used by the hospital and give the hospital kudos in the local community,” he told the meeting.
The council will also undertake a review of the heritage value of the property for possible local heritage listing in an amendment to the 2015 Sutherland Shire local environmental plan (LEP).

An interim heritage order may be sought to stop historic Hotham House at Kirrawee being demolished to make way for a car park.
Cr Ray Plibersek will move for the action when Sutherland Shire Council meets on Monday night.
His motion will also call for talks with owner Macquarie Health Corporation to seek preservation of the house and its continued use within the President Private Hospital complex.
Cr Plibsersek will also propose the council undertake a review of the heritage value of the property for possible local heritage listing in an amendment to the 2015 Sutherland Shire local environmental plan (LEP).
“The Hotham Road house is an important example of the shire’s architectural housing heritage,” Cr Plibsersek said.
“Council will investigate whether the house can be listed as a heritage item and work with the owners to save the house for future shire residents and hospital users to enjoy.”
Cr Barry Collier, who will second the motion, raised the matter at the September meeting of the council’s planning committee.
The council’s director of planning provided a brief history of the property and confirmed it was not listed as a State or local heritage item.
The director said options for the council included listing the building as a heritage item in the LEP or seeking an interim heritage order.
Both options would require a more detailed heritage study, he said.
