Sutherland Shire Council will consider allowing dogs on leads to be walked on Silver Beach, Kurnell, at certain times.
The council, at its meeting on Monday night, unanimously agreed to a review following calls by dog owners.
The report will look at options for timed or seasonal leashed dog walking.
However, the council stipulated there would be no expansion of the existing off-leash area on Silver Beach, and the exclusion of dogs on leashes in the beachfront adjacent to the swimming baths would continue.
A community engagement plan for options will be formulated.
Mayor Carmelo Pesce, who met with campaign leaders in August, moved for council staff to prepare a report, which will be considered by the infrastructure committee before the full council decides whether to change the existing policy
Cr Pesce said, at present, there was a dog off-leash area just east of the boat ramp at Bonna Point between the third and fourth groynes.
Apart from that, dogs on leads were prohibited along the remaining two kilometres of beachfront.
“In recent weeks I have met with community representatives seeking council to relax the current prohibition to enable dogs on leads to be permitted at certain times,” he said.
“I am advised council last considered dogs on Silver Beach in 2001 as part of a broader report on off leash dog areas across the shire.
“Having regard to the passing of time and recent representations it is suggested council revisit this issue.
“Any review should be limited to opportunities to walk dogs on leads and not create further off-leash areas on the beach.”
Cr Pesce said the council wanted to encourage active lifestyles and, for many people, dog walking could be a healthy and sociable activity.
“On the other hand irresponsible dog owners can cause issues, so a balance needs be found,” he said.
“I am mindful that these types of decisions can be divisive in local communities and, for this reason, I am not suggesting an immediate change but call for a report on the merits of changing the current arrangements.”
