NSW Multiculturalism Minister Ray Williams and Oatley Mark Coure have announced $75,000 funding for Sydney’s flagship Greek cultural festival in 2019.
The 36th Greek Festival of Sydney will be held from February 16 to June 17, 2019 at various venues throughout Sydney including several events at the St George Auditorium at Kogarah.
Last year, festival organisers decided to expand the festival program in St George to cater for the region’s large Greek population.
Festival organisers estimated the St George area was home to more than 50,000 people of Greek heritage.
Mr Williams said NSW is home to more than 130,000 people with Greek ancestry, and more than 80,000 people who speak Greek at home.
“This is a much-loved festival by the Greek Australian community,” he said
“The Greek Festival of Sydney is one of the longest running cultural events in NSW.”
Mr Coure said the Festival was a staple event for the local Greek community.
“The Greek Festival of Sydney enriches our local community both socially and economically,” Mr Coure said.
“We are lucky to enjoy such a world-class event at our doorsteps, with the Festival leading the way as one of Australia’s top cultural festivals.”
Greek Orthodox Community of NSW President Harry Danalis said the Greek community was delighted to receive support from the NSW Government.
“The Greek Festival of Sydney is an internationally renowned event which
showcases the best of Greek and Greek Australian heritage and culture,” Mr Danalis said.
“The Festival attracts interest from artists and performers from around the world and is a much-anticipated event for the whole community.”
