Students with a disability have welcomed innovative furniture into their classrooms – making learning much more flexible.
IMB Bank Shire Community Foundation provided a grant to Endeavour High School’s SKWAD – Special Kids With A Disability, for 27 active stools and chairs.
This was followed by a successful grant application in 2018 to fund the Flexible Furniture for Better Learning Project.
It provided additional stools that enable rocking for improved self-regulation and individual height adjustable desks.
Flexible furniture means that students can sustain attention to task in the classroom, making it easier for them to extend focus and reduce behaviour and patterns that would otherwise make this a challenge.
The overall effect of the flexible furniture also translated to effective classroom learning, better self-regulation, greater well-being and reduced anxiety and disruptive behaviour for students.
SKWAD was formed by parents of students in the school’s learning support unit.
The foundation is now calling on applications for 2019 funding, and is pledging $100,000 to shire charities.
