A successful partnership between two Sutherland Shire organisations is helping young people achieve their career dreams.
Miranda RSL has had a joint venture with NOVA Employment for the past four years.
Executive chef of Miranda RSL, Andrew Harper, provides training to aspiring chefs who want to pave a path towards a career in hospitality.
Job placements include apprentice chef positions, waiters and waitresses and bar/gaming attendants.
“Clubs were built on helping the community,” Mr Harper said.
“We currently have three staff from NOVA and one from House With No Steps.
“One of our apprentices who came through NOVA has just qualified as a chef and moved on to bigger and better things.”
One of the first-year apprentices at Diggers Restaurant is Corey Elliott.
Like many NOVA job candidates, he was offered work through proving himself during a work-experience placement.
He was originally interested in IT, but he was encouraged to try fields out of his comfort zone.
“My ambition is to stay here and finish my apprenticeship,” he said. “Eventually over time I’d like to open up my own place.”
The Australian Labour Market Research and Analysis Branch predicts there to be more than 983,000 new jobs created in service-based industries in a variety of skill levels over the five years to May 2022.
