They were preparing to enjoy a New Year’s Day lunch when the family heard a whistling noise and noticed flames from under the BBQ.
Realising the gas line to the LPG cylinder had failed the family quickly moved to the front of the house and called ‘000’.
A short time later a loud explosion was heard as the cylinder failed and the resulting fireball melted furniture across the yard.
A crew from Fire and Rescue NSW Station 020 Hurstville attended the home and one resident was treated by NSW Ambulance for smoke inhalation.
“They avoided a tragedy with fast action by the residents evacuating people to the front of the house, away from the BBQ, saving serious injury,” Hurstville Fire and Rescue posted on Facebook.
