1980s: Rockdale Council was concerned about the risk of shark attack for many people who were swimming outside the netted enclosures.
Graphic warnings signs, photographed at Brighton-Le-Sands in 1986, request dog owners to keep them out of the water as "dogs attract sharks".
1970s: A city-bound train was stopped at Caringbah station in October, 1975, after what appeared to be a bomb was found in one of the carriages.
The Army bomb disposal unit was called in, and declared it a hoax.
The 1970s were a period of high alert for bombs in Sydney.
In September 1972, two bombs were detonated at Yugoslav travel agencies in Haymarket, the first injuring 16 people, two critically.
No one was injured in the second bombing, both of which were believed to be connected to the executions of Croatians with Australian passports in Yugoslavia.
In February, 1978, two garbage collectors and a police officer were killed and 11 other people injured when a bomb exploded outside the Hilton Hotel in the city, where the first Commonwealth Heads of Government Regional Meeting was being held.
1960s: Rockdale Council was accused of "trying to create a new Kings Cross in Brighton-Le-Sands" after dismissing complaints from residents in Princess Street about flats being built in their area.
Chairman of the Residents Action Committee, Mr K Richardson said Princess Street - which runs behind and parallel to the Bay Street shopping strip - would become "a sunless canyon".
The front page of the Leader on December 7, 1960, which reported the story, also carried a photo of motorists standing next to cars, which became stranded in floodwater over Audley weir.
A tow truck had to pull an ambulance, containing two injured men, across the flooded causeway.
1990s: Australia, and St George, had a new world champion in 1995 when Kostya Tszyu stripped Puerto Rican champ Jake Rodríguez of the junior welterweight title with a sixth round knockout in Las Vegas.
Tszyu's wife Natasha told the Leader, "We've settled in Sans Souci and we love our neighbours and friends".
The Russian couple emigrated to Australia following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, married in 1993 and became Australian citizens, making Sans Souci their home.
Tszyu defended the world title several times, starting with a points decision over Roger Mayweather and a knockout of Hugo Pineda.
2000s: Dorling Bros, one of the best known motor vehicle repair businesses in St George, closed in 2003 after 75 years.
The business was originally called the Star Garage when it opened in the 1920s on Princes Highway, near Regent Street, Kogarah.
It was taken over by the Dorling family in the 1950s.
Over 75 years, hundreds of apprentices, including many award winners, learnt their trade there.
When the Star Garage opened, it was one of the largest and complete auto repair centres in Sydney.
It provided everything from new car sales to mechanical and electrical repair work, trimming, chassis and body repairing and even vehicle body building.
Stan Hodgen, who began work there in 1954 and bought the business in 1972, made the tough decision to close the workshop in 2003.
"It's a lot harder these days," Mr Hogden told the Leader.
"The demands being placed on auto repair businesses are many and for a small operator it is often difficult to meet those demands.
"The trade is also losing its attraction for young people."
