Sutherland Shire Council in conjunction with Sutherland Leisure Centre have spent thousands on refurbishing the water polo pool.
It is this pool that is used for the deep water aqua aerobics class.
Their clientele on average would be over 60 and some members much older.
However in the new pool they have not allowed for this age group or those with a disability like myself.
They have provided wider ladders that go deeper into the water however there are no steps with a rail, no ramps nothing that would allow anyone with a disability or weaker due to age to maintain their independence or attend these classes.
When I spoke to management at the leisure centre about this issue I was informed that they feel they have fulfilled their obligation.
I find this attitude in this new day of inclusion to be unacceptable. What the pool will be providing is a hoist that will lift you out of the pool.
Not only is that not acceptable it is so demeaning to be separated from everyone made to stand out and feel even more disabled.
If a step with a rail or a ramp had been provided I could've managed myself.
The hoist has to be managed by two staff and you need to wait until they are available. Once again choice is taken from me.
The whole thing is just so difficult to understand how the council could allow this to be OK. It is discriminatory.
