After 40 years of providing fine dining for locals and visitors alike the popular Le Sands Restaurant at Brighton-Le-Sands ceased trading this morning.
The site was repossessed by the property owner Cook Park Reserve Trust.
The restaurant is located on crown land which is held by the Cook Park Reserve Trust and managed by Bayside Council.
The lease also covers the Brighton Kiosk and the temporary outdoor licence.
"The lease holders were in breach of their lease and had been so for some time," a council spokesperson said.
"They had been given ample time and opportunity to rectify the breaches but had failed to do so.
"Council was left with no other option but to repossess the property."
Part of the property was sublet by the lease holder to two restaurants: Hurricanes Bar and Grill Republiq Shisha Bar and Grill.
Neither of these restaurants is in breach of their agreement with the head leaseholder.
Temporary licences will be issued to allow them to continue operating and Council will continue working with both these tenants to minimise any disruption to their businesses.
"Bayside Council recognises the importance of this site as a vibrant commercial hub and popular community venue," the council spokesperson said.
"This decision was not taken lightly and Council is looking at all opportunities to ensure the ongoing success of businesses operating on this iconic site."
