A stockpile of more than 5000 used tyres has prompted Victoria's environmental watchdog to lay charges against a Melbourne recycling company.

Thomastown-based company ELT Recycling Australia and its director have been charged, the Environment Protection Authority said on Thursday.
"Improper collection and storage of waste tyres can pose a real risk to the environment and community health, as it can increase the likelihood of catching fire," the authority said in a statement.
The company has been charged with storing the tyres without a works approval or licence, and without the watchdog's approval.
Inspectors from the Resource Recovery Facilities Audit Taskforce discovered the illegal stockpile.
The taskforce was set up in 2017 after a fire at a Coolaroo recycling plant took hold and burned for more than 20 days, prompting the evacuation of some nearby homes and reports of medical complaints.
The recycling company faces a fine of up to $385,000 if found guilty.
