Labor's Linda Barton has been returned to the seat of Barton for a second term.
Ms Burney, who is the first Indigenous woman elected to Federal Parliament in 2016, managed to increase her vote, enjoying a swing to the ALP of 0.9 per cent.
The AEC has her margin in Barton at 9.8 per cent, strengthening the electorate's statues as well and truly a safe Labor seat.
Ms Burney had secured 59.19 per cent of the vote on a two candidate preferred basis, and the Liberal's Pramej Shrestha 404.82 per cent.
"I am deeply honoured and humbled to have been re-elected by the people of Barton to represent them in the parliament," Ms Burney said.
"I remain absolutely determined to ensure our local area has a strong voice in Canberra, and that it receives its fair share for a thriving and sustainable community."
Ms Burney was Shadow Minister for Human Services and Shadow Minister for Preventing Family Violence.
She said just before the election that she wished to continue concentrating on these areas.
Liberal candidate for Barton, Pramej Shrestha congratulates Linda Burney on her re-election.
"It was a tight race in the end, with only a 0.9 per cent swing towards Labor," Mr Shrestha said.
"I knew it was going to be tough in Barton. However I'm so thankful that I was given the opportunity to represent the Liberal Party locally, meet new people and listen to their concerns. It's so humbling to receive words of support from people all over the electorate, congratulating me for having a go," Mr Shrestha said.
"Barton is an area close to my heart. I will continue to be involved in our community and hold local representatives accountable.
"Overall, I'm so proud to be a part of the Morrison Liberal team. The Government is able to continue their great work by delivering lower taxes, a stronger economy, more jobs and guaranteed essential services for all Australians."
