Indigenous NRL player Preston Campbell played 54 games for the Cronulla Sharks before moving to the Penrith Panthers with whom he won the 2003 NRL Premiership and finished his career at the Gold Coast Titans.
Preston is now an ambassador for the NRL Indigenous Round, taking place in Round 11 where the Sharks meet their neighbours the St George Illawarra Dragons (May 23 - 26), the weekend aims to highlight significant social issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
It is also an opportunity for Rugby League to cement their commitment to the Indigenous community and celebrate the unique relationship between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and rugby league.
Preston addressed the Sharks squad and talked about relationships and looking after yourself so you can help those around you,saying the Indigenous community doesn't want sympathy but everyone can do with support.
Cronulla Aboriginal Elder and artist Deanne Schreiber also unveiled this years Indigenous jersey she had designed with the local derby in mind, using the shared totem of the whale and the ocean.
"I didn't feel it was appropriate to draw a dragon" Deanne said
"The whale is common to both tribes and of course I also put in a shark, I added the colour red to represent St George"
Sharks players Andrew Fifita,Chad Townsend,William Kennedy,Braydon Trindall and Jayden Brailey also participated in some traditional Aboriginal dancing much to their teammates delight ,but they held their own whilst looking forward to a celebration dance this Sunday after the game.
