A 10-metre high rocket ship was erected in Cook Park, Kyeemagh, the year Neil Armstrong took man's first steps on the moon 50 years ago.
The four-level rocket ship, with internal ladders, was a favourite piece of play equipment in the park, which Rockdale Council converted from a rubbish tip.
The Leader, on January 22, 1969 reported:
"For all imaginative children whose latest game is pretending to be astronauts orbiting the moon, here is just the thing to add a touch of realism - a 30-foot high rocket.
"The rocket is part of a three-piece 'imaginative playground equipment set', being installed in Cook Park, Kyeemagh at a cost of $3000.
"Rockdale Apex Club and Rockdale Municipal Council each paid $1500 for the equipment."
Fifty years later, children have the opportunity to look through powerful telescopes o see the crater where Apollo 11 landed on July 20, 1969.
Sutherland Astronomical Society will hold two open nights at Green Point Observatory, Oyster Bay, to mark the 50th anniversary.
The open nights will take place on Friday and Saturday, August 9-10, when there will be a great view of the moon.
