The Lugarno Progress Association are launching their Say No To Single-Use Plastic campaign on Saturday, August 3 at Chivers Hill Shops.
Progress Association members will be at the shopping centre from 9.30am to 2pm on the day to talk about how single-use plastic is choking local waterways and what can be done to stop the problem.
"We will have giveaways, raffles and the results of an art competition by students of the Lugarno Public School who submitted works on the campaign's Say No to Single-use Plastics theme," Progress Association member Michael Springs said.
"The students' art-works will be on display at the shopping centre.
"We will be giving away reusable drink bottles, and reusable shopping bags and talking to people about the problems of single-use plastics and how it is choking the Georges River every year.
"We were prompted to launch the campaign because of the significant amount of single-use plastics such as plastic drinking bottles and shopping bags and particularly soft plastics such as polystyrene containers that are clogging up the river," Michael said.
"The Progress Association feels motivated now because this problem is getting worse.
"We need to use less of these items and the only way to do this is to start educating people about the problems and the solutions available such as reusable shopping bags."
Funding was provided for the campaign by Georges River Council, supported by Councillor Rita Kastanias.
