Update
The police Public Order and Riot Squad was called in after a motorist went on a road rampage between Sutherland and Bangor early on Saturday morning.
The man 61, allegedly deliberately rammed other vehicles, mounted the footpath, drove on the wrong side of the road and through a red light.
When finally stopped, police had to smash the window of his car to get him out. He allegedly refused a breath test.
The man was charged with refuse or fail to submit to breath test, drive motor vehicle menaces another with intent, not stop vehicle when directed to do so, and not stop at stop line at red light.
It was later stated in court he suffers from schizophrenia.
A police vehicle responding to the incident with lights and siren crashed into a car at the intersection of President Avenue and Acacia Road, Sutherland.
An updated police statement said:
"About midnight (Saturday 27 July 2019), a Hyundai Getz travelled north on East Street, Sutherland, and allegedly crossed onto the incorrect side of the road and collided with a Toyota Corolla being driven south, causing it to spin and hit a parked Holden Commodore.
"The Hyundai continued north on East Parade and at the intersection of Adelong Street has again allegedly crossed on to the incorrect side of the road.
"Another Toyota Corolla pulled over in attempt to avoid a collision; however, was hit by the Hyundai.
"Witnesses from a nearby cafe surrounded the vehicle; however; the Hyundai reversed and drove over a median strip and onto Oxford Street, narrowing missing the pedestrians.
"The Hyundai continued north on Linden Street before colliding with a Suzuki Swift slowing to stop at a red traffic light at the intersection of The Grand Parade.
"The Hyundai reversed before allegedly ramming the Suzuki three more times and continuing on north on Linden Street.
"Officers from Sutherland Police Area Command and the Public Order and Riot Squad responded and located the Hyundai travelling west on Menai Road at Bangor.
"The driver failed to stop, and a low-speed pursuit was initiated.
"At the intersection of Menai and Yala Roads, the Hyundai is alleged to driven through a red traffic light.
"Police followed the Hyundai until it stopped on Anzac Road. The driver and sole occupant refused to get out, and officers smashed a window before removing and arresting him.
"After refusing a breath test at the scene, the 61-year-old man was taken to Sutherland Police Station where he is was subjected to a breath analysis, returning a negative result.
"He was charged with refuse or fail to submit to breath test, drive motor vehicle menaces another with intent, not stop vehicle when directed to do so, and not stop at stop line at red light.
"The man was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Bail Court today (Saturday 27 July 2019).
"The drivers of the vehicles involved were reportedly uninjured.
"A male police constable is receiving treatment for minor injuries at St George Hospital after being involved in a collision at the intersection of President Avenue and Acacia Road, Sutherland, with a Mazda 3, whilst responding to the incident.
"The crash will be subject to investigation."

A man, 61, has been charged after after driving into multiple vehicles, almost hitting pedestrians, during a rampage between Sutherland and Bangor earlier today.
A police vehicle responding to the incident with lights and siren crashed into a car at the intersection of President Avenue and Acacia Road, Sutherland.
The driver of the police vehicle was taken to hospital for observation, while the driver of the other car suffered minor lacerations.
The rampage started just after midnight on Saturday when a Hyundai Getz, travelling north in East Street, Sutherland, collided with three vehicles.
A police spokesman said witnesses surrounded the vehicle, but the man drove the car up on to the kerb and and almost hit them as he left the scene.
"The vehicle continued to the intersection of Linden Street and The Grand Parade, where it rammed another vehicle at a set of traffic lights," the spokesman said.
"The car then continued to Menai Road and, a short time later, police engaged the vehicle in pursuit.
"At the intersection of Menai Road and Anzac Parade, Bangor, the vehicle stopped and the driver, a 61-year-old man, was removed from the vehicle and arrested.
"He was taken to Sutherland Police Station where he is assisting with inquiries.
"A police vehicle which was responding to the incident under lights and sirens collided with a civilian vehicle, a Mazda 3, at the intersection of President Avenue and Acacia Road, Sutherland.
"The male driver of the police vehicle has been taken to St George Hospital for observation. The male passenger in the police vehicle was uninjured.
"The driver of the Mazda 3, a 25-year-old man, suffered minor lacerations and did not require hospital treatment.
"The crash will be subject to investigation."
The man will appear in Parramatta Court today.
