Just over six months ago, the speed limit on a large stretch of Heathcote Rd was reduced from 100km/h to 90km/h.
At the time, there was quite a lot of debate in the Leader, with a large contingent against the change.
Having now had time to experience the road at the 90kph limit, my view is that it is a much more appropriate speed for the road, particularly at night.
However, the changed limit has not curbed two adverse habits of drivers.
Firstly, the driver who proceeds at 10/15kph below the speed limit, oblivious to the build up of traffic behind (and who then speeds up when reaching the overtaking lanes). Secondly, the tailgater, who I seem to encounter on most mornings, despite travelling at the speed limit.
These drivers are not smart enough to realise (a) you cannot go any faster than the car in front of you and (b) even if they get past, they will encounter more traffic doing the correct speed.
Drivers, relax, turn on the radio and sing along with Meatloaf's Like a bat out of hell.
