Bayside Council has a new mayor, Labor Councillor Joe Awada.
Cr Awada was elected unopposed on Wednesday night and takes over the role from fellow Labor councillor Bill Saravinovski.
There were two nominations for Deputy Mayor, councillor James Macdonald and councillor Christina Curry, each receiving seven votes.
Cr Macdonald was elected Deputy Mayor out of the hat.
In accepting the mayoral nomination, Cr Awada said it was an honour and privilege to be elected to lead the council for the next 12 months and he was looking forward to representing all of Bayside.
''I will give it my all,'' Cr Awada said.
''We amalgamated in 2016. I don't think of it as an amalgamation but rather the combining of two great cities.
''We have delivered some great outcomes and we will continue to do so.
"There are already many significant projects underway and I am looking forward to seeing them through to completion.''
Cr Awada, who has been on council for the past 14 years and will have his first opportunity as mayor, paid tribute to Cr Saravinovski, thanking him for his strong leadership and support over the years.
In his 2017 election manifesto Cr Awada told the Leader he aimed to serve the broader community by making decisions that are in the best interest of ratepayers.
"I am an advocate of open space, safe roads, modern designs and local parks for families. In making decisions on these issues, consulting with the community has been the most effective feedback," Cr Awada said.
''As I have done in the past, I will be committed to listen, work hard and to achieve the best result for all."
Mayor Awada and Deputy Mayor Macdonald will both retain the roles until council elections in September 2020.
