Civic Café Engadine has opened its doors to the public with supported employees serving their first customers.
Civic took over the previously named Birdcage Cafe at 35A Waratah Road, Engadine and catering business from Sylvanvale on September 1 to provide supported employment to people with disability.
After 22 years, Sylvanvale has decided to move out of supported employment and focus on its core business of supporting people in Supported Independent Living and our Community Hubs.
Civic has offered re-employment for the café and catering service's supported employees to ensure the change has little or no impact on its customers.
The cafe has a fresh new look and an updated menu and is already proving popular with the locals.
Civic Catering Manager, Joel said the Civic staff hope to make the cafe a destination for the local community.
"Our new menu has lots of favourites, like avo smash or bacon and egg roll for brekkie, together with burgers and wraps for lunch," Joel said.
There is a new children's area with books, toys and a chalkboard, so parents can relax and have a coffee.
The Civic Cafe had its official opening on Friday, October 18 attended by Heathcote MP Lee Evans, Civic chief executive Anne Doyle and Sylvanvale chief executive Leanne Fretten along with supported employees , their families and catering customers.
Founded in the 1950s by a group of parents caring for their children with disability in the Sutherland Shire, Civic now provides whole-of-life services in many NSW locations. More than 500 people in Sydney and regional areas receive vital services from Civic.
