A new playground in Acacia Road, Sutherland North, results from a mutually beneficial land swap.
Under a deal made two years ago, Sutherland Shire Council agreed to reclassify and transfer a portion of community land to Bupa Aged Care to allow 80 housing units for independent living to be built next to its existing facility on Princes Highway.
In exchange, Bupa handed over an equal portion of its property to the council, the shape of which made it easier to develop a public park in conjunction with adjoining public land.
Mayor Carmelo Pesce, who officially opened Acacia Road Reserve Playground on Thursday, said the community had benefited from the successful partnership.
"This land exchange has allowed Bupa to achieve its seniors housing development and for both of us to deliver this fantastic park for our community," he said.
"The park will serve the local community, Bupa residents, their families and friends."
The playground is ideal for toddlers, with artificial grass, easily climbed structures and cycle paths, but a drawback is it's not fully enclosed.
The facility also includes exercise equipment and a water bubbler.
