Work has started on the $14.3 million Stage 2 of the Penshurst Park Sporting Hub.
The work will include new synthetic sports field with hydraulic cricket wicket, 275-seat grandstand, youth centre with multi-sports courts, outdoor exercise station and extension of the Hurstville Aquatic and Leisure Centre.
Stage one, the $6 million Norm O'Neill Cricket Training Facility, opened last year.
Once completed, the project at Penshurst Park will see the site transformed into a regional sporting hub.
Georges River Council mayor Kevin Greene said the sporting hub will deliver key new infrastructure to the local community with provision of accessible, modern facilities that encourage active lifestyles.
"The new facility will help build a healthier and happier community with more opportunities to participate in sport and recreation," Councillor Greene said.
"We understand there are different groups of people within the sport and recreation community, and some have different requirements.
"This is why the design includes a youth centre, outdoor gym equipment, and accessible amenities and change rooms.
"There will be a grandstand so people can enjoy watching sport all year round on the new synthetic sports field, which includes an hydraulic cricket wicket.
"The car park will be upgraded, and there will also be an all abilities playground, which, as we have witnessed in other areas of the Georges River, are proving incredibly popular," he said.
The Commonwealth Government provided a $1,000,000 Community Development Grant to support and assist Council in the construction and delivery of the synthetic football field.
The remaining funds were allocated from developer contributions and council funds.
Work is expected to be completed by March, 2021
