The Grandviews Mens and Womens Bowling Clubs hope their recent fundraiser will launch wider awareness of the work by the volunteers of the Woronora Rural Fire Brigade.
The bowling club held a fundraiser at its Peakhurst clubhouse on the Australia Day weekend to raise money for the brigade.
The Open Triples bowling tournament attracted about 80 players and raised $3,452 which they presented to the brigade volunteers this week.
The bowlers hope the fundraiser will create public awareness of the important work of the Woronora Rural Fire Brigade.
"We picked them because of their boat patrols," Grandviews Mens Bowling Club treasurer Peter Monahan said.
"The brigade patrols the whole of the Georges River from Warragamba Dam down to Botany Bay.
"They have three boats including one which they designed themselves and has just been fitted out with new equipment.
"They get some support from the Rural Fire Service but also have to do a lot of their own fundraising.
"There are about 90 homes in the Woronora area that don't even have access by road so the brigade has to land in inaccessible areas and then climb up hills through bushland to reach properties that may be in danger.
"This means they have to carry about five times the amount of hose than the normal fire trucks.
"The brigade was instrumental in stopping the fire at Voyager Point reaching the M5.
"They are all volunteers and they don't even have enough funds to have mobile phones. They have to use their own phones during fires."
In addition, the brigade has to spend $8,000 to replace equipment damaged fighting the bushfires.
"This is a specific cause with unique requirements," Mr Monahan said.
"This is money well-spent. We picked the right mob."
