State MP for Miranda Eleni Petinos has congratulated three Sutherland Shire schools for receiving funding under the inaugural Sustainable Schools Grants program.
Ms Petinos said three schools in her electorate - Illawong Public School, Gymea Technology High School and Bonnet Bay Public School - were successful in receiving grants as part of the student-led program that aims to improve school environments.
"The Sustainable Schools Grants will empower students and school communities to implement projects that will benefit the environment by helping to save energy or water, reduce waste, or improve biodiversity," Ms Petinos said.
"I am pleased that Illawong Public School will receive $15,000 for its 'From Pump to Produce to Plate' project. The grant will facilitate the installation of pumps, taps and hoses on existing rainwater tanks, a new vegetable garden and students selling their crops to families at farmers markets."
Gymea Technology High School will receive $13,110 for its 'Sustainable Propagation Project', which will provide Science and TAS students with greenhouse facilities for hands-on learning experiences.
Bonnet Bay Public School will receive $7860 for its 'Bee Plus!' project to increase the numbers of native bees in the school and local area.
"I very much look forward to seeing these wonderful projects come to life in the coming months," Ms Petinos said.
Education Minister Sarah Mitchell said 194 NSW public schools received Sustainable Schools Grants ranging from $1000 to $15,000 each for innovative sustainability projects ranging from kitchen gardens to water storage strategies.
