Clean Up Australia Day will be held for the thirtieth year on Sunday.
Ian Kiernan and Kim McKay initiated the first clean-up in Sydney in 1989 and the response was so great Clean Up Australia Day was launched as a national event in 1990.
Mr Kiernan, who died in 2018, was motivated by the rubbish he found in the sea while sailing solo around the world in 1987.
People who wish to take part in Sunday's event can find the nearest site locations by inserting their postcode on the Clean Up Australia Day website.
Many schools were expected to clean up areas today (Friday).
The motto for this year's event is Step Up to Clean Up
Sutherland Shire mayor Carmelo Pesce encouraged individuals and groups "to do their bit to clean up our beaches, parks and bushland areas across the shire".
"We're keen to see as many people as possible get involved," he said.
"We are lucky to live in a beautiful area that is surrounded by stunning natural landscapes, but it is up to all of us to ensure this natural environment is protected and looked after for generations to come."
