A new child care centre, owned and managed by Bayside Council, located on the former Darrell Lea site in Kogarah will be known as the Garrigarrang Early Education and Care Centre.
Garrigarrang or 'sea country' is the Aboriginal name that was unanimously agreed on by Bayside Councillors at the first meeting for 2020.
"The name and meaning is very appropriate. It identifies the location and symbolically embraces the land and water elements of the local environment," Bayside Mayor Joe Awada said.
"Council is looking forward to taking over this state-of-the-art centre which will provide a much needed service for the local community."
The Garrigarrang Early Education and Care Centre will employ 13 staff and cater for 66 children:
. 31 aged from 0 to 3
. 35 aged from 4 to 5
Located at 2 Garrigarrang Avenue and overlooking Scarborough Park the Centre has been funded by a Voluntary Planning Agreement between Council and JQZ Nine Pty Ltd following the rezoning of the land from industrial to residential.
Once the handover is complete Council will begin the process of internal fitout, recruitment and licensing, a process which can take many months.
