The Sky Blues had good patches of play and were up for the challenge, creating some excellent chances, most notably one for Veronica Latsko in the second half, but an early Steph Catley goal for Melbourne was enough to deny Sydney their record fourth Championship win.
Captain Teresa Polias said she has loved playing alongside the team and leading them this season.
"We came close but I think we've set up our team really well for the future and I can't wait to see what's ahead of us," she said
It still ends a successful season for the Sky Blues who finished the campaign in third place and remain the only team to have qualified for all 12 Westfield W-League Finals Series.
