Bayside Council has acknowledged the extraordinary contribution of former Rockdale mayor George Francis Moore who died on Monday, May 25.
In a Mayoral Minute to be presented at tonight's extraordinary council meeting, Bayside mayor Joe Awada honoured Mr Moore who was three times mayor of Rockdale.
Mr Mooore served on Rockdale Council from 1965 to 1995, representing the Fourth Ward.
He was Mayor of Rockdale from 1972 to 1975; 1978 to 1980 and finally from 1984 to 1985.
"He was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 1991 for services to local government, an honour well and truly deserved," Councillor Awada said.
"There is an exhaustive list of organisations for which George contributed over his lifetime. These include executive member, Local Government Electricity Association, member of the Bexley Rotary Club and Life Member of St George Hospital.
"He served as a member of Sydney County Council from 1980 to 1981 and was Chairman from 1985 to 1887.
"At the time, Sydney County Council was NSW's largest electricity distributor. George also served his country during World War II as a radar operator for the RAAF.
"Following the war he was a member of the Bexley RSL Sub Branch and Club and served as Chairman of the Bexley RSL Sports Council.
"Perhaps George's greatest legacy to his local community was as long serving Chair of Council's Park's and Recreation Committee where he was instrumental in the development of outdoor spaces.
"Much of the development of parks and reserves in the Rockdale area during the 1970s and 1980s, particularly those along the beachfront at Brighton-le-Sands, were championed by George.
"He was also the foundation cairman of the Rockdale Community Nursery which continues today as the much loved and thriving Bayside Garden Centre.
"George was married for 67 years to his devoted wife Patricia, who passed two years ago.Together they worked tirelessly for their community, the benefits of which we continue to enjoy today.
"On behalf of Council and the community, our sincere condolences are extended to George's family."
