Georges River Council was divided over a plan to rescind its decision to demolish the Carss Park pool and proceed with an investigation of the suitability of Todd Park as the site of a future regional aquatic centre.
A rescission motion submitted by Councillors Kathryn Landsberry, Vince Badalati and Rita Kastanias was debated at an extraordinary council meeting last night.
If it had been carried, the three councillors would have moved a motion calling for detailed technical investigations of both Carss Park and Todd Park to confirm the most suitable site for the proposed development of a regional aquatic facility.
"It would be premature for us to proceed with Todd Park as the preferred site without having all the information," Councillor Landsberry said.
"There are too many unknowns. Please consider both sites so we can get all the information."
But the rescission motion was defeated by eight votes to seven.
Councillor Landsberry said there was a huge reaction from the community at the news of the propposal to build a regional aquatic facility at Todd Park.
"What has started as a campaign to save Carss Park pool has grown to become a much larger community campaign to save Todd Park," she said.
A petition to save Todd Park had gathered 630 signatures over three days as of Monday.
