Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club has welcomed Nutri Grain Ironman competitor Jay Furniss back to the Bate Bay beaches to head up their Nipper training program.
Jay Furniss is the 2019 Australian Male Open Board Champion and is a professional Ironman who has represented Manly SLSC for the last six years but grew up competing for Wanda SLSC .
Jay is also a full time teacher and said he is still competing but the whole Ironman circuit is up in the air due to current circumstances and nobody knows its future .
"I'm looking forward to coming back to the Shire and helping rebuild the competitiveness of such an historic club" Furniss said
"I am starting now and will try and lead the club using the skills I've learnt from competing and teaching.
" I will also try and retain our kids to go on to compete for the senior club by keeping them working and engaged with each other"
Richard Pinker the Cronulla SLSC President said the Club is extremely pleased to welcome Jay to Cronulla and looks forward to the new relationship going forward.
"We have been reviewing our nipper program to improve the experience we provide to the kids on a Sunday morning, and Jay is the perfect fit to take this program to the next level.
"His skills both athletically and professionally are what we have been looking for and the timing fits with the imminent opening of our redeveloped Clubhouse. Already there is a buzz amongst the nippers when the announcement was made." Pinker said
Cronulla is the oldest Bate Bay SLSC formed in 1907 and with around 600 Nippers Jay will have his hands full.
