Plans have been lodged to demolish the former Allawah Community Church at South Hurstville to make way for a $1.42 million block of six townhouses.
A development application has been lodged by Catalyst Constructions to demolish the church and neighboring cottage at 2 to 4 Derwent Street, to be replaced by a three-storey, six-dwelling block housing 12 residents.
The townhouses are to be managed by the owners, Stewards Foundation of the Christian Brethren, according to the development application's accompanying Plan of Management.
The church is described as a modest example of a mid-Twentieth Century building, while the building cottage next door is a late 19th Century to early 20th Century cottage.
Neither building is on the local heritage register.
"The proposal provides a low-scale multi-dwelling housing development which would sit comfortably in the existing streetscape and provide appropriate levels of amenity for its occupants while preserving the amenity of adjacent properties," the Statement of Environmental Effects.
The proposal is generally consistent with the applicable planning controls and is in the public interest, the SEE concluded.
Submissions on the development application are open until July 20.
