Key rail infrastructure upgrades have started near Hurstville Station as part of a $600 million program to modernise the network.
Oatley MP Mark Coure said the upgrade will allow 20 per cent increase in peak services.
"The important work underway at Hurstville is part of a wider infrastructure upgrade plan to enable more frequent services to be delivered for customers on the T4 Illawarra, T8 Airport and South Coast lines," Mr Coure said.
"We're prioritising these lines because they are among the busiest on the network, catering for 440,000 trips in a typical day, which is around one third of daily rail customers."
Andrew Constance, Minister for Transport and Roads, said that work at Hurstville has now begun to install a new rail crossover near the station which will allow trains to cross over from one track to another.
"This new piece of infrastructure will allow for improved rail operations. Train services travelling away from the city ending their journey at platform 4, can then use the crossover when they start their return service to the city," Mr Constance said.
Mr Constance and Mr Coure visited the station recently to see how work was progressing.
"This project, combined with our other key upgrades across the network, will allow us to increase peak services on the T4 Illawarra Line by 20 per cent," Mr Coure said.
"This includes an extra three trains an hour for an important transport hub like Hurstville during the busiest times of the day."
"Trips to and from Hurstville Station have increased by almost 30 per cent between 2015 and 2019 so these service improvements will be critical to ensure customer needs continue to be met," Mr Constance said.
The service improvements for Hurstville Station are planned for late 2022.
The $600 million package of work being delivered as part of the NSW Government's More Trains, More Services Program will create around 550 new jobs across a range of disciplines including engineers, rail construction workers, plumbers, labourers and apprentices.
