After his recent win against former WBO Welterweight champion Jeff Horn, Carss Park local Tim Tszyu has signed up for another fight.
This week he joined many other sporting legends to sign the pledge to Save Carss Park Pool (Kogarah War Memorial Pool) and Todd Park.
Tim became Number 2 in the WBO ranking at Junior Middleweight level after defeating Jeff Horn in eight rounds at Townsville on August 26.
And while that victory was a professional career highlight, the fight to save Carss Park Pool is a personal challenge.
Tim spent his childhood at the pool where his father, World Champion boxer Kostya trained.
The whole Tszyu family has a strong connection to Carss Park Pool.
Carss Park Pool meant so much to the Tszyu family that Kostya at one point approached the former Kogarah Council offering to buy the facility so it could be upgraded for the future generations.
As a youngster Tim was inspired by all the champions he watched train and succeed at Carss Park.
He credits a large part of his recent success to the discipline and determination that he learnt as a young athlete at Carss Park Pool under legendary coach Dick Caine.
"I have incredible memories of the pool and the gym," Tim said.
"Saving this pool is not just about preserving the legacy from the past, it is just as much about providing the opportunities for today's youth to become the future champions."
Tim joins other sporting legends in the signing the pledge who trained at Carss Park Pool including Michelle Ford, Sonny Bill Williams, Phil Kearns, Janelle Pallister (nee Elford), Emma Carney, Greg Welch and coach Dick Caine.
The pledge says: "I pledge my support for the rebuilding of the 50m Carss Park Pool on the existing site at Carss Park and the preservation of the parklands and playing fields at Todd Park."
Next Monday, Georges River Council will debate whether to initiate a feasibility study on the existing Carss Park Pool site and postpone the demolition of the pool.
Councillor Vince Badalati has lodged a Notice of Motion that a feasibility study be initiated on the Carss Park Swimming Pool site to determine if it is the feasible to rebuild a swimming pool and fitness centre, as existed previously to the closure of the pool.
He is also asking that the demolition of the old pool be postponed until Council has considered the Feasibility Studies of both Todd Park and the Carss Park Sites.
