One of the most famous teams in Australia is about to turn 100 with the St George 'Dragons' just waiting for their letter from the Queen before they cut the cake for their 2021 celebrations.
Undoubtedly the most famous of all grand finalists, the St. George Dragons played into the imaginations of rugby league fans by winning 15 premierships, including an unbelievable 11 in a row from 1956 to 1966.
St George RLFC, in conjunction with St George Illawarra Dragons, launched their 2021 Centenary, with plans for a Centenary Book - by historian Geoff Armstrong, additions to their Kogarah Oval Legends Walk and a new Museum within the St George Leagues Club.
There will also be a 'Team of the Century' and the 100 Greatest ever Dragons.
The St George District RLFC was officially formed at the Kogarah School of Arts on November 8, 1920, and the 'Dragon Slayers' played their first match on St George's Day, April 23, 1921, against Glebe at the Sydney Sports Ground.
St George Chairman and St George Illawarra Dragons Director Craig Young said 100 years is a significant milestone and the Dragons today are one of the most famous and recognisable brands in international sport, with a rich and proud history.
"There have been so many memorable moments, gifted players and generations of passionate fans, and we look forward to celebrating with all 'Red V' supporters throughout 2021,and as the legendary Club administrator Frank Facer once said to me, 'we never forget those who dug the well'.
Guests in attendance at the launch included former Prime Minister and Dragons number one Ticket Holder John Howard OM, AC who spoke about his introduction and love for the Dragons growing up nearby at Earlwood and the glory days.
Former players including John Riley, Steve Edge, Ricky Walford, Brad MacKay, Mark Gasnier, Ben Creagh, Ben Hornby, Dean Young, Jason Nightingale were also in attendance along with current fullback Matt Dufty, a local St George junior.
