Three schools in St George and Sutherland Shire ranked in the top 50 schools in the state based on the 2020 HSC results.
All were public selective high schools.
Caringbah High School topped the region in 30th place - up from 48th spot the previous year - making it the best performing school in the region based on the number of students who achieved a Band 6 result for one of more HSC course.
Eleven of its students were included in the HSC All-round Achievers list, while 156 students achieved high scores in one or more subjects.
St George Girls High School at Kogarah, another government selective school, was in second place in 39th spot, down from 32 the previous year.
Sydney Technical High School at Bexley, a selective high school for boys, rounded out the top 50 in 42nd spot, down from 40 the previous year.
The non-government Danebank Anglican School for Girls at Hurstville was the highest ranked non-government school in the region in 75th spot, a fall from 34th place the previous year.
It was closely followed by St Ursula's College at Kingsgrove, which was the highest ranked Catholic school in the region. It was in 77th spot, down from 66th the previous year.
Bethany College at Hurstville was next on the list, in 80th spot, down from 73rd the previous year but vastly improved on its ranking of 203 in 2013.
A number of other Catholic schools in the region made it into the top 200 schools.
Aquinas Catholic College at Menai was 102 on the list - up from 158 the previous year. It ranked 228 in 2015.
Marist College Kogarah made its debut on the list in 118th spot, while Marist Catholic College Penshurst was in 130th spot - down slightly from 126 the previous year.
De La Salle Catholic College at Cronulla rose to 148 on the list, up from 190 the previous year.
St John Bosco at Engadine flew up 82 spots in the rankings. It was 160th on the list, compared with 242 the previous year.
Non-government St George Christian School at Hurstville was in 108th spot, up from 117 the previous year, while Inaburra School at Bangor was ranked in 119th place - up from 156 the previous year.
Menai High School was the best performing non-selective government school in the region and the best in Sutherland Shire. It was in 166th spot - up from 264 last year and 296 in 2013.
Blakehurst High School rounded out the top 200 list in 178th spot - up from 226 the previous year - making it the best performing non-selective government school in St George.
Caringbah High School's year 12 adviser for 2020 Nadia Kudsi said students demonstrated their ability to work independently and consistently despite the many interruptions to their learning.
"Parent and teacher support were especially vital this year. Regardless of how the learning happened, the students did not give up," she said.
"We are delighted for all the students and wish them well."
De La Salle Catholic College principal Steven Mahoney only started at the school last year and was thrilled with the result.
"We are delighted with this year's HSC results and I congratulate students and staff on their efforts," he said.
"This was a year of unprecedented difficulty and I am very proud of how everyone at the college has stepped up magnificently to the challenge.
"We are back in that high-performing group of schools that comprise the state's top 150 HSC performers.
"I attribute our success to the agility of staff and students who quickly adapted to remote learning, using online classrooms and Zoom conferencing to continue with quality teaching and learning during the most difficult days of 2020."
