Nine homes will need to be acquired for a proposed four-storey commuter car park near Jannali train station.
Transport for NSW has chosen a site on the western side of the station behind the commercial precinct and community centre.
The site is bounded by Mitchell Avenue, Mary Street and Victoria Street.
The facility would be across the road from new apartment blocks in Mitchell Avenue and opposite many other established single homes.
Owners of those properties are likely to strongly oppose the proposal.
Miranda MP Eleni Petinos, who announced the proposed site on Thursday, said the new car park would provide 200 additional car parking spaces for public transport customers.
"Nine properties need to be acquired in order to deliver the proposed commuter car park," she said.
"Transport for NSW are currently liaising directly with owners and tenants of the affected properties to ensure they have the support needed during the acquisition process."
Ms Petinos said, subject to community consultation, which will occur later this year, and planning approval, construction was expected to start in mid-2022 and be completed by the first half of 2023.
The government decided late last year to go it alone to find a site for the commuter car park, which was promised at the 2019 state election.
This followed unsuccessful negotiations about incorporating a commuter car park in a proposed Woolworths development of the council-owned car park behind the shopping centre on the eastern side of the station.
Ms Petinos said the proposed location, next to the commercial precinct opposite the station, followed a review of potential sites in the area.
"On-street parking and other vacant land in the area was considered, but were not progressed because of issues with layout and proximity to the station," she said.
"This proposal will not only provide customers with greater access to public transport, but will generate around 60 jobs, ensuring we have more tradies with tools in hand."
Key features of the proposal include:
- A four level multi-storey car park on Mary Street, Victoria Street and Mitchell Avenue, providing approximately 200 additional car parking spaces.
- Accessible parking spaces.
- Lift access; Installation of CCTV, lighting and wayfinding signage for safety and security.
- Provision for future electric vehicle charging spaces.
- Transport Park and Ride infrastructure (Opal operated boom gates).
- Rooftop solar panels.
