Sandbags safety concerns will be addressed says Bayside Council

Bayside Council says the sandbags were installed to address beach erosion issues and would remain in place until a more permanent solution is developed.

Resident Grant Popplewell told the Leader he thought the sandbags were unsightly and unsafe.

"They are slippery, they move around, have become mouldy and they generally are unsafe," he said.

"I wonder why the Bayside Council can't place sand to create a natural beach, as they have at Cronulla beach?"

A council spokesperson said addressing erosion was a primary concern for the Bayside Council.

"The sandbags are in place to slow the erosion and protect the seawall while investigations on how best to address the issue of beach erosion across the whole of the Sandringham Bay Seawall are underway," the spokesperson said.

"Addressing erosion along the foreshore, following the expansion of the airport and seaport, is a major issue which will require support, especially financial support, from the state government to rectify."

The spokesperson said the council would address residents' safety concerns.

"The sandbags are in place to prevent further erosion and currently fill the gap between the stairs and the water," the spokesperson said.

"Council will remove the buildup of marine growth on the sandbags to help ensure the safety of the area.

"When entering the sea or any water from stairs, rocks or sandbags, one should always be cautious."
